Remember that time
When you got run over by a biscuit in lake Wanaka?
You were so worried you would drown
Because you didn’t take a breath of air quick enough
But luckily dad was faster and the biscuit was only there for a split second.
That was summer.
Remember that time
When you had sleepless nights reading a 488 paged novel?
Remember the book scared you
And you started hearing noises which you knew were just hallucinations
But you were still terrified?
Remember you retreated to mum and dad’s room because you were too frightened?
That was summer.
Remember that time
When you tried so desperately to spot sperm whales in the Kaikoura canyon
And then in the distance you saw water splash up like a geyser?
You felt so excited that you spotted your first ever sperm whale.
And then there was another and another
In total there were five whales.
That was summer.
Remember that time
When you got salt water in your snorkel
But it was worth it
Because you got so close to dolphins that you could touch them
Then all of a sudden a rude dolphin cut in front of you and it didn’t even give you a tail fin wave or a click?
Remember when there was 1 dolphin that stayed behind and kept playing with the swimmers and challenging* them?
That was summer.
*They swam around the swimmers seeing if they could keep up with them, it was called “being challenged”.*
